The nose knows! 01-10-02

If an employer does not like the smell of perfume, does she have the right to prohibit the wearing of perfume or to fire the employees if they defy her?

Ann Kiernan replies:

Yes, it is perfectly legal for employers to have "no fragrance" provisions in dress codes. Odors don't have to be offensive to create problems for co-workers. I once had a secretary who wore so much perfume that everyone could smell her coming and going. My law partner's sinus problems were aggravated by the scent, so I asked her to please stop wearing perfume to work. Problem solved.
